Tube Welder

Rumba makes landmark donation

A year after the launch of The Rumba Foundation, we announced our first donation which funded the purchase of a Sterile Tube Welder which was presented to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) Blood Transfusion Service.

This machine is used in blood laboratories to apply heat to weld separate sections of PVC tubing together. The tubing itself is a critical element of applications such as blood transfusions. Because the connection occurs in a sterile environment, the safe and effective exchange of blood components for animal patients is ensured. Importantly, this allows the clinicians to use parts of a blood bag during a procedure and re-seal any remaining blood for future use.
The number of blood transfusions administered by the Blood Transfusion Service increased by 46% in just one year and the tube welder plays a vital part in ensuring that donated blood products are used as efficiently as possible.

RVC Blood Transfusion Nurse, Claire Marshall said:
“We use the tube welder on nearly a daily basis for splitting full units of blood to create half, third and quarter units for smaller patients, which means we can get the most of our blood products with zero wastage.”

Founding Trustee Fiona Hindle said:
“We agreed from the outset that we didn’t want the funds we raise to be absorbed into a central pot of money’. Instead, our aim is to fund the purchase of specific items that are needed to help save animals’ lives. We have great admiration for the pioneering work of the RVC’s Blood Transfusion Service and we’re so pleased to know that ‘our’ Sterile Tube Welder will play a key role in treating critically ill dogs and cats.

“If this story has inspired you to make a contribution to help fund our next life-enhancing purchase, you can donate here. Your gift will be enormously appreciated.”
